HBO Max: Here's Why the Streaming Service Is a Must-Have for Parents

Most streaming services offer at least some solid programming options for families. But the coronavirus pandemic left many households stranded indoors. Suddenly, kid-friendly content has become even more popular. It’s at least partly why Universal’s Trolls: World Tour experiment was such a success. And HBO Max is absolutely tapping into the family market.

At $14.99 per month, HBO Max isn’t the most affordable streaming service on the market. But a subscription is automatically included for subscribers to HBO Now. And even for HBO newbies, the amount of content offered more than makes up for the higher price point.

Lots of original content devoted to children’s programming

HBO Max includes the entire HBO library as well as a ton of Warner Bros.-produced movies and TV shows. So films like The Lord of the Rings trilogy and shows like Friends and The Big Bang Theory are available. But the streaming service also has a lot of original content.

Some of this, of course, is not appropriate for younger viewers. But HBO Max is also relying heavily on a pair of major brands to entice families to sign up. The Not-Too-Late Show with Elmo gives the lovable Sesame Street star his own talk show. Likewise, hundreds of episodes of Sesame Street are available to stream instantly too.

Then there’s the Looney Tunes content. HBO Max will feature a ton of classic shorts featuring Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and the gang. But the streaming service will also debut brand-new, never-before-seen animated shorts with the rascally characters.

RELATED: From Disney Plus to HBO Max: Here’s a List of Upcoming and Current Streaming Services

Several of the HBO Max content hubs are kid-friendly

Both Sesame Workshop and the Looney Tunes have their own channels, or hubs, on HBO Max. But they’re far from the only ones featuring family-friendly content. In fact, the streaming service secured exclusive U.S. rights to the Studio Ghibli library. That channel includes the Oscar-winning movie Spirited Away and other Hayao Miyazaki classics.

Moreover, Cartoon Network has an entire channel too. Click right into current shows or classics such as The Powerpuff Girls, Dexter’s Laboratory, and Adventure Time. Older kids can catch up with the DC Extended Universe on its channel until HBO Max rolls out Zack Snyder’s Justice League in 2021.

The entire ‘Harry Potter’ series is included

But perhaps the biggest “get” for Warner Bros. is the entire Harry Potter series. Both that movie series and HBO Max are owned by Warner Bros. So fans wouldn’t think there would be an issue bringing J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World to the streaming service.

Yet, reports claimed Harry Potter’s streaming rights sat with NBCUniversal until 2025. But all eight movies popped up in subscribers’ feeds on launch day. It’s unclear how Warner Bros. pulled this off. Nonetheless, the movie series will probably be one of HBO Max’s signature pieces of content.

After all, Harry Potter has inspired the same level of rabid fandom as Star Wars. And since Disney+ has its “galaxy far, far away,” it stands to reason HBO Max would accio the Harry Potter franchise. Truly, the platform has a lot to offer families, but Rowling’s boy wizard is among the most significant.

'The Office': Why 'The Convention' Episode Was 'Calculated' to Keep Fans Wondering About Jim and Pam

In season 3 of The Office, Jim Halpert headed off to another branch of Dunder Mifflin after professing his love for Pam and sharing a kiss with her — and ultimately getting rejected. The distance with Jim in the Stamford office and Pam back in Scranton meant that fans wouldn’t see them share any screen time for a bit. In the May 27 episode of the Office Ladies podcast, the reason behind the episode titled “The Convention” is revealed — and it has everything to do with connecting Jim with Scranton.

‘The Convention’

In The Office Season 3 Episode 2, characters from the Scranton and Stamford office meet up at an office supply convention in Philadelphia. Dwight and Michael travel from Dunder Mifflin in Scranton and Jim and Josh Porter come from Stamford. Jan comes to the convention from corporate.

Michael is still angry at Jim for leaving Scranton and is bothered by Josh and Jim’s inside jokes and camaraderie. Meanwhile, the story follows Pam in Scranton, who is now single, and is set up on a date by Kelly.

Michael attempts to throw a party in his hotel room but it’s a flop, but Jim comes to Michael’s room and reveals the reason he left Scranton was because of Pam rejecting him and not because of Michael.

The episode was a way to bring Jim together with his formerco-workers

While the episode didn’t move the Jim and Pam storylineahead, it did provide an opportunity for Jim to come together with his formerco-workers in a way that didn’t feel forced.

During the Office Ladies podcast, Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey discussed the episode and Fischer revealed that the whole concept of the convention storyline was to connect Jim with his Scranton co-workers without having any interaction with Pam.

Fischer shared that the episode concept was purposeful. “So they’re all reunited now at the convention and this was calculated. They knew that they needed to keep Jim and Pam apart by sending Jim to Stamford but they did not want to keep Jim from interacting with Dwight and Michael.”

She added, “So that was kind of the reason for this wholeepisode was to get Jim back in the world with these other characters but stillseparate him from Pam, who is back at the office dealing with her own stuff.”

The episode featured many extras at the convention

Since the episode centered around a convention for the mostpart, the show had to create a realistic conference scene, so they put out arequest for extras to act as attendees and company representatives at booths.

During Office Ladies, Fischer shared a behind-the-scenes fun fact: the episode was shot at the Burbank Hilton Hotel in a convention room and the production staff filled out the event by contacting real businesses to see if anyone would participate.

Those interested were told to bring their own convention materials for the booth and set up the booth themselves, as well as provide their own staff and wardrobe. They were also told that they were not guaranteed screen time. The Office was so popular that they easily got the extras they needed to recreate the feel of an actual convention.

“There were 176 total extras/background performers and 140 of them were actual employees of actual companies,” Fischer shared.

Why Do So Many People Hate Jimmy Fallon on 'The Tonight Show'?

Jimmy Fallon took his everyday guy-next-door personality to the late night scene beginning in 2009 on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon before moving into his The Tonight Show hosting gig in 2014. Not everyone is a fan of Fallon and his talk show, however.

Fallon got his start on ‘SNL’

Fallon got his TV start on Saturday Night Live as a featured player beginning in 1998 and became a household name with his impressions of Adam Sandler and Jerry Seinfeld, among others, in addition to appearing in sketches. He also co-hosted the “Weekend Update” desk with Tina Fey from 2000 – 2004.

Fallon had appeared in some movies over the years, starring in Taxi and Fever Pitch, but his acting career flatlined. He returned to TV after the movies fizzled; Late Night with Jimmy Fallon premiered in 2009 and he later became the host of The Tonight Show after Jay Leno left.

Some people hate Fallon on ‘The Tonight Show’

Though Fallon carved out a place in the late night landscapewith a unique blend of interviews, sketches, and games with his guests, noteveryone is a fan of the TV host.

All you have to do is visit the comments section of clips from The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on YouTube to see that not everyone loves how fake he appears during interviews.

Discussions about Fallon’s interview style are all over Reddit, with one user’s thread asking “Is Jimmy Fallon aware of how people don’t like his fake/forced laughing during celebrity interviews?”

Many Redditors agreed, with one noting, “I stopped watching long ago because of this” and another sharing, “I don’t know how fake it is, but sure is awkward.”

Not everyone finds him fake, however

There are plenty of Fallon fans too, as Redditors seemed to agree that his laugh is the real deal. One Reddit user noted, “Have you seen him on SNL? He doesn’t fake laugh, he just laughs at everything.”

“Yeah, hate the laugh all you want, but it’s not fake,” another Redditor noted. “Jimmy Fallon is the friend you want nearby when you tell a story of questionable funnyness.”

Others defended Fallon as being “light hearted and happy” and making sure that he’s a “welcoming host to every guest.”

“I have attended the show live twice, in person it doesn’t seem fake like it does when watching it on tv,” one Reddit user shared. “He genuinely has a good time and is cracking jokes with the audience during commercial breaks.”

Another Reddit user pointed out that Fallon’s personality came shining through when he was on Seinfeld’s interview show. “I had the same opinion as you that it was a forced/fake laugh, until I watched him on Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee and realized that’s just Jimmy’s natural personality and now I enjoy the show so much more,” they explained.

Fallon addressed the criticism

You can’t make everyone happy and Fallon fully understands that, even addressing the criticism that he’s a “kiss ass” to his guests during a 2015 SiriusXM interview with Bill Carter,

He said he genuinely loves his guests and isn’t striving for a serious interview show where things get deep. “That’s not my job,” Fallon explained at the time. “My job is, again, is to make everyone look good, no matter who it is, if you’re a politician or whatever it is. We have people on that people don’t like. I know that. But that’s not my job. You make your own opinion. I can just show you the best person that they are and try to bring out their more personal side and play with them.”

'Ozark': Why Julia Garner Says Coronavirus 'Unfortunately Helped' the Show Become More Successful

26-year-old actress Julia Garner took the entertainment world by storm with her Emmy Award-winning portrayal of Ruth Langmore in popular Netflix series, Ozark. The third season saw a significant uptick in first-day viewership from its second season, and Garner acknowledged the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) might have “unfortunately helped.”

Julia Garner on ‘Ozark’ as Ruth Langmore

The Jason Bateman and Laura Linney-led crime drama series revolves around financial adviser Marty Byrde, who has to relocate his family to a small town in Missouri to set up a money-laundering operation for a Mexican drug cartel.

Viewers are introduced to tough and sharp-tongued 19-year-old Ruth Langmore (Julia Garner) in the second episode when she attempts to steal the initial money meant for Marty to begin laundering.

While she initially came off as only another member of the local crime family, Marty soon realizes she’s brilliant and invites her to work for him. Ruth agreed with the intentions of learning his trade and then turning on him.

However, she began to see Marty as a father figure and decided to partner with him, even cutting off most of her family for the financial adviser. In the third season, viewers see a new side of Ruth when she falls in love with an unexpected visitor.

Although innocent at first, the relationship threatens to come between her and Marty forever.

‘Ozark’ Season 3 became very successful

The third season of Ozark launched on March 27, 2020, only days before stay-at-home orders were enacted in nearly every state in efforts to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

According to Nielsen’s data, 975,000 Americans watched the crime drama series’ third season on the day it dropped on Netflix, a noticeably massive uptick from the 314,000 viewers who tuned in on the Season 2 premiere date. Additionally, over a million Netflix users logged in the day after the Season 3 premiere to watch the series.

While many credit the jump in viewership to the recognition Ozark has received at several award ceremonies, Netflix shows overall have enjoyed a nice surge because people are practicing social distancing and spending more time at home.

Julia Garner says coronavirus ‘unfortunately helped’ the show

In a Deadline interview, Julia Garner acknowledged the series’ recent success, and admitted the novel virus might have something to do with it, although it “sounds terrible.”

She explained the third season “unfortunately” dropped at a “perfect time” due to the social distancing recommendations. Garner also talked about how her character developed this season and her excitement to play a different side of Ruth as she always views her roles as real people “evolving.”

Even though viewers see another side to the sassy Langmore in the third season, Garner acknowledged her character still “only knows how to be a criminal.”

Why Kevin Hart’s wife, Eniko Parrish, stayed with him after he cheated

Kevin Hart opened up about why his wife stayed with him despite cheating on her.

“She came to an amazing conclusion of, ‘I like the fact that we have a family, that we have a household, and I like the fact that we now got a job to do to get better,’” he said on “The School of Greatness” podcast of Eniko Parrish, who is pregnant with their second child together, a baby girl.

“‘That’s what you owe me. You owe me the get-better.’ And she held me accountable,” Hart, 40, continued. “It wasn’t a walk in the park, but it was her understanding that we don’t let the outside world affect our inside, and I credit her for setting that tone.”

The “Jumanji: The Next Level” star gushed over her, calling her “the strongest person in the world.”

Hart and Parrish are already parents to 2-year-old son Kenzo. Hart also shares two children with ex-wife Torrei Hart: 15-year-old daughter Heaven Hart and son 12-year-old son Hendrix Hart.

Hart cheated on Parrish with model Montia Sabbag while on a trip to Las Vegas in 2017. The sexual encounter was caught on video, which was later released in an alleged attempt to extort the comedian.

Sabbia publicly maintained she didn’t release the tape and agreed Hart was as much a victim as she was. She changed her tune in September 2019 when she sued Hart for $60 million, claiming that Hart and his friend J.T. Jackson set her up and hid a camera during their rendezvous.

The lawsuit was later dismissed.

Peter Weber Just Revealed Why He Ended Up With Kelley Flanagan Post-‘Bachelor’

Peter Weber may have been keeping his relationship with Kelley Flanagan on the down-low at the start of their romance, but a few weeks after going public it seems the pilot is more than willing to spill some details about their love life. In a recent Cameo video for a fan’s birthday, Peter revealed why he chose Kelley after The Bachelor. And he explained why the reality show setting wasn’t conducive to their relationship.

“You guys want some inside scoop here on why I ultimately picked Kelley? All right, here’s what I can do,” Peter explained in the birthday message to a 16-year-old fan, which was posted on Instagram by Bachelor fan account Bachelornation.Scoop. He added that while he still thinks the nature of the show works, “I think specifically for the type of relationship between, you know, Kelley and myself just wasn’t the most organic type of situation for us if it was going to actually work."

This then prompted Peter to recall a Spanish saying that his grandmother used to always say to him, which he shared with Hannah Brown during one of their dates on The Bachelorette. The phrase in question essentially means "No matter what happens, let the waters run," which he says sums up his entire Bachelor journey. It’s a motto the pilot feels rings especially true to his relationship with Kelley, given that the two of them always seem to find their way back to each other.

"Obviously we’ll see what the future holds for Kelley and I, but I think it’s a beautiful story, definitely a beautiful love story of what’s yours is yours and it will always come back to you, no matter what," Peter continued. “That’s kind of always been our relationship. We’ve kept coming back in each other’s lives. So the way I look at it, [it’s] definitely an unorthodox way [of finding love] but [it] definitely worked in the end.”

And as an added little birthday surprise, Peter even brought Kelley out to say hi and sing "Happy Birthday" to the teen alongside him. They also imparted a few words of wisdom when it comes to dating. Kelley advised to “just have fun,” while Peter suggested she “go on The Bachelor” once she hits her mid-twenties. The clip ended with Peter asking the fan to virtually accept a small red rose from him in tribute to the reality series that brought him into the spotlight.

It’s a sweet gesture to bestow upon a fan, though it seems clear that the actual final rose has already been gifted to someone else.

Why Michael Jordan's Wife and Kids Aren't Featured in 'The Last Dance'

While everyone is stuck at home during the COVID-19 pandemic, the docuseries genre has been a major attraction to TV watchers. And The Last Dance, the ESPN series about basketball legend Michael Jordan’s final season with the Chicago Bulls, is no exception, with close to 100 people providing different accounts coupled with never-before-seen video footage from that iconic era in the NBA.

But throughout the series, there’s something missing—his family doesn’t appear anywhere in the interviews (with the exception of his daughter, Jasmine, making a brief appearance in the final episode), which is surprising, as his older three (Jasmine, along with sons Jeffrey and Marcus) were all born while he was on the Chicago Bulls (he married current wife Yvette Prieto in 2013 and welcomed twin daughters Victoria and Ysabel the following year). It’s an interesting conundrum—if they know the basketball legend best, why aren’t they featured in a documentary about his life?

Well, director Jason Hehir has an interesting answer for this occurrence—he didn’t think the family needed to be used as sources for a show about basketball’s G.O.A.T..

“I wasn’t interested in the opinion of any wife or kids in this,” he told The Athletic. “We had the storytellers we wanted and I felt like we had the story covered from every angle.”

Honestly, that makes sense. And just because Jordan’s family isn’t central to the story, that doesn’t mean that the kids aren’t learning new things about their father after every episode. In fact, Jasmine (who was only five years old when the cameras were rolling during the titular Last Dance season) told NBA.com that she always has questions for her father after watching the show.

“I’m definitely texting him non-stop,” she said. “I think there hasn’t been an episode, a Sunday where I haven’t been like, ‘This happened. Let me know your thoughts.’”

Jasmine also made a point to detail how the family is learning more about her dad and his life while playing the game. “I think if you remove the basketball and all the accolades he achieved for obvious reasons,” she said, “I think I’m definitely learning that my dad was really trying to take in the pressures and the expectations and not allowing it to weigh on him and really manifesting it into his own.”

“I’ve definitely seen him really take on that role and embracing that role and not running from it and really becoming the greatest player to ever play the game,” she continued. “And that’s because he always wanted to do that.”

Cameran Eubanks Reveals Why She’s Leaving ‘Southern Charm’

Spilling the sweet tea! Cameran Eubanks addressed “ridiculous” cheating rumors surrounding her departure from Southern Charm — and revealed the real reason she’s leaving.

“I was going to make a kind statement about why I decided to leave the show tomorrow,” Eubanks, 36, wrote via Instagram on Wednesday, May 13. “However, it has come to my attention that insidious rumors are now spreading and fake articles are being written … some of which pertain to my marriage.”

The South Carolina native admitted that rumors about her husband, Jason Wimberly, allegedly having a mistress are “upsetting,” but noted that she’s not surprised by them as “this is what reality television has come to nowadays and a large reason why I kept my marriage off air.”

“You must protect what is sacred to you. Some things aren’t worth a big paycheck,” the reality TV star continued. “What upsets me the most is that my husband, who is the most sincere and faithful human I know is being falsely dragged into this. It disgusts me.”

Eubanks, who married Wimberly in 2014, defended her husband and his choice to stay off the Bravo series the past six seasons.

“He always supported me filming the show even though he wanted no part of the spotlight,” she wrote. “I can’t get too upset though because this is what you sign up for when you put your life on reality TV … and why I’m getting out of it now.”

“Drama is needed to stay relevant on reality television and sadly false rumors about other are sometimes created,” the Real World alum continued. “Make of that what you will and consider the source.”

The real estate agent explained that she chose to leave the show “months ago” and it had “absolutely nothing to do with ridiculous and fake rumors about my marriage.”

“Please disregard any fabricated rumor. It’s a ploy to ratings and that’s it,” Eubanks added. “Now I absolutely know I was smart to leave the party early. My gut has never failed me.”

The TV personality concluded by thanking all of her fans and everyone involved with the show, writing, “To all of the genuine and kind fans, cast and crew that I have worked with [over] the years and had the pleasure of knowing … thank you.”

Eubank’s statement came hours after stories surfaced regarding her husband allegedly having an affair, which was reportedly going to be exposed on the upcoming season of the reality series.

One day prior, Eubanks, who has been a full-time cast member since the show’s 2014 premiere, told a fan via Instagram that she wouldn’t be returning to Southern Charm for season 7.

Why Joe Jonas Says He and His Brothers 'Really Miss the Crap Out of Each Other' During the Coronavirus Pandemic

A lot of families are separated during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Even famous ones — and Nick Jonas, Joe Jonas, and Kevin Jonas are among those. As the Jonas Brothers are actually family in addition to being a popular music trio, they aren’t happy to be away from each other. Here’s what Joe said about how they’ve been dealing.

The Jonas Brothers became popular on the Disney Channel

The Jonas Brothers formed their band in the mid-00s. They were initially signed with Columbia Records but soon began to work more closely with the Disney Channel. They signed with the company’s record label, Hollywood Records, through which they put out three albums in as many years.

Disney is known for having its young stars cross-pollinate through its various properties. So for a few years there, they were everywhere. They played themselves in Hannah Montana and various Jonas Brothers documentaries while starring in the Camp Rock films and their own short-lived original series Jonas.

They broke up for a time

Then came the fallout. In 2011, the Jonas Brothers took a brief hiatus. They reunited and began to release new music. However, after beginning a tour in 2013, the Jonas Brothers abruptly split once more. Their live album, LiVe, was thought to be the last fans would ever see of them.

It was several years before they would make amends. The Jonas Brothers’ triumphant return came in early 2019. Since then, they’ve released multiple hit singles, their album Happiness Begins, a documentary of the same name, and much more.

The Jonas Brothers have hung out virtually

These days, they can’t seem to get enough of one another. In addition to working together, there have been a lot of family events, including the weddings to Nick and Priyanka Chopra, and those of Joe and Sophie Turner. But now, due to the coronavirus pandemic, they’re each sheltering in place in their own homes with their respective wives (and children, in Kevin’s case).

“This is the longest [time we’ve been apart] I think in this new era,” Nick told Jimmy Fallon on a virtual The Tonight Show appearance in April 2020. “But when we were not working together, there were times we would not see each other for three, four months at a time.” They appeared to have a great time at their virtual hangout with Fallon.

Now they ‘miss the crap out of each other’

Though the pandemic rages on, there’s still content to promote. Joe has a Quibi series, Cup of Joe, and he did a video for GQ where he answered fan questions. One asked about how the Jonas Brothers get along, and Joe had a really sweet answer, in which he revealed that he’s missing Nick and Kevin.

“Well we’ve learned to put family first and that’s been really important for us,” he wrote on Quora, as in the YouTube video. “And also we’ve learned to respect when each other needs some time and we have our own separate lives. So I think at this point we really miss the crap out of each other. It’s been so long since I’ve seen these guys.”

There’s new music from the Jonas Brothers

Surprisingly, Cup of Joe isn’t all Joe is busy promoting. The Jonas Brothers released a follow-up to their documentary, a concert film appropriately titled Happiness Continues. What’s more, they’ve continued to release new music.

On May 11, 2020, they teased a new collaboration with Karol G, simply titled “X,” due out on May 15. It looks like the Jonas Brothers are still happily working together, even when separated by the regulations of a global pandemic.

Sean Lennon Explains Why He Refuses to Call His Lover His 'Partner'

Musician Sean Lennon recently opened up about his abhorrence for the label “partner” when referring to a lover or significant other.

The 44-year-old son of artists Yoko Ono and John Lennon has his very specific reasons for this preference in what one should call one’s beloved.

Sean Lennon’s girlfriend/lover

Lennon met model and singer Charlotte Kemp Muhl at Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in 2004 and they’ve been in a relationship since 2006.

Muhl explained in 2011 what it’s been like to record music with her boyfriend.

“I’ve learned he’s incredibly generous in the studio, more than any other area of his life. He’s a feminist in the studio. He’s very supportive and great to work with. I’m learning better studio etiquette from him,” she told Boston.com.

Lennon then revealed the secret that Kemp Muhl kept from him for a very long time. In her case, she was keeping from Lennon the fact that she is a songwriter and singer.

“It was a year after we were dating, and it was one of the most shocking things that ever happened to me. I’ve never known anyone to hide any talent, let alone a musical one. She really kept it from me. I think she felt like everyone I knew was a musician, and she didn’t want to be another, ‘Hey, check out my demo.’ ’’

Sean Lennon on his own musical legacy

Sean Lennon has found his own musical footing, with albums including Into the SunHalf Horse, Half MusicianFriendly Fire; Rising; Blueprint for a Sunrise, and many more.

“In the past, I never realized it, but I was sort of an island,” the artist told Interview magazine in 2010. “I was writing songs about my feelings and I was controlling everything and producing my own music.”

“It was really interesting and probably an important part of my musical growth, but it wasn’t until I had a writing partner that I realized how fun and exciting songwriting can be. Now I’m able to collaborate and write songs that are not necessarily just about my view of the world, but that are a creative and collaborative fantasy.”

He and Kemp Muhl have created their own label, Chimera Music, and their band called GOASTT, or The Ghost of a Saber-Toothed Tiger, active since 2008.

‘Partner’ doesn’t work for Sean Lennon

Lennon tweeted this week that it irks him to hear a person refer to their romantic other half as ‘partner.’

His post said, “When did it become woke to say ‘my partner?’ I mean it’s the least sexy moniker I can think of. It’s as if you’re working together at a law firm. I’d rather be called ‘my bitch.’ “

As could be expected, Lennon’s tweet received interesting replies from his followers.

“I usually just say ‘this is my fly girl touch her and you dead home skillet,’ ” said one response.

Another tweet laid the blame for use of the word ‘partner’ right at Lennon’s father’s feet.

“Hate to break it to you, but it came from your Dad’s youth. Think of the term like bell bottom jeans – a bad retro idea which ought not have been revived.”
